If you never fertilise your plants, you are practically starving them. The consequences are reduced growth, discoloured leaves and susceptibility to pests and diseases. In the long term, plants weakened in this way can die. An exception to this are peat-free or heavily peat-reduced potting soils, which often need to be fertilised earlier with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser. If in doubt, always follow the manufacturer&#8217;s fertiliser recommendations on the packaging.<\/p>\n<p>In general, high-quality potting soils are fertilised during production according to their intended use. The nutrient composition of a classic potting soil is therefore different to that of a specialised soil, e.g. for vegetables or citrus plants.<\/p>\n<p>You can recognise high-quality soil by the <strong>RAL quality mark for substrates for plants<\/strong>. A database in which you can search for substrates with the RAL quality mark is linked here: <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.substrate-ev.org\/en\/manufacturer\/\">To the product filter<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, you should also start fertilising high-quality soil no later than 6 weeks after planting. The nutrients are then as good as used up and the plants will soon grow much more slowly. Their respective proportions in a fertiliser are usually given in this format: NPK 7-3-6 (example values). The fertiliser in our example therefore contains 7 % total nitrogen, 3 % total phosphate and 6 % total potassium oxide. Other main nutrients are magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca) and sulphur (S).<\/p>\n<p>If one of these main nutrients is no longer available to the plant in sufficient quantities, the first symptoms of deficiency soon appear:<\/p>\n<\/div><ul style=\"--awb-line-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-width:27.2px;--awb-icon-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-margin:11.2px;--awb-content-margin:38.4px;--awb-circlecolor:var(--awb-color4);--awb-circle-yes-font-size:14.08px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-1 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\"><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><u>Nitrogen:<\/u> stagnant growth, light green to yellow-green leaves, later also dying leaves (<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Necrosis\">necrosis<\/a><\/strong><\/span>).<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><u>Phosphorus:<\/u> Brown to black-brown leaf spots, stunted growth, dropping buds.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><u>Potassium:<\/u> The tissue between the leaf veins bulges, leaf tips and leaf edges discolour and the leaves eventually fall off. Weak growth with only small flowers \/ pale fruits.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><u>Magnesium:<\/u> Yellowish leaves with green veins.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p><u>Calcium:<\/u> Mostly affects fruit and vegetable crops and causes growth disorders and <strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chlorosis\">chlorosis<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><u>Sulphur:<\/u> leaf lightening of the young leaves.<\/div><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:25px;\"><p>Nutrient deficiency symptoms therefore lead to clearly visible damage to the plant, which significantly reduces its overall aesthetic appearance (ornamental plants) or has a significant negative impact on the harvest (fruit and vegetable plants). <strong>It is therefore important to fertilise the plants before the first symptoms of deficiency appear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-4 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1248px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-7\"><h3>How often do I need to fertilise my plants?<\/h3>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-8\"><p>The frequency with which you need to fertilise your plants essentially depends on these two factors:<\/p>\n<\/div><ul style=\"--awb-line-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-width:27.2px;--awb-icon-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-margin:11.2px;--awb-content-margin:38.4px;--awb-circlecolor:var(--awb-color4);--awb-circle-yes-font-size:14.08px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-2 fusion-checklist-default type-numbered\"><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\">1<\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p>What kind of plant is it?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\">2<\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p>What kind of fertiliser is used?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-9\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:25px;\"><p>Unfortunately, we cannot go into every single plant species in this article, but the general rule is that fast-growing plants need to be fertilised much more frequently than slow-growing plants. This is simply due to their higher nutrient requirements. The vegetables in the raised bed and the bedding and balcony plants in the box therefore need fertiliser more often than the apple tree in the garden. More on this below.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>frequency of fertilisation<\/strong> also depends largely on the fertiliser used. Organic slow-release fertilisers are less recommended for indoor plants due to their inherent odour. The fertiliser is added to the planting hole when planting or (for existing plantings from the end of March) worked into the soil on the surface around the plant. The nutrients are gradually released to the plant over a period of 3-4 months. From August onwards, the supply is usually used up and herbaceous plants (vegetables, bedding and balcony plants, possibly perennials) should continue to be fertilised with liquid fertiliser. However, woody plants (roses, shrubs, fruit trees) should no longer be fertilised in favour of maturing new shoots.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p><u>Liquid fertiliser:<\/u> Depending on the type of plant, fertiliser should be applied every 1-2 weeks during the summer growing season and approximately every 4 weeks in winter for indoor plants. The correct dosage is achieved by adding a certain amount of fertiliser concentrate to a defined amount of water. The nutrients from the liquid fertiliser are immediately available to the plant. It is not possible to apply fertiliser in advance. &#8220;A lot helps a lot&#8221; can lead to over-fertilisation and corresponding damage.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p><u>Fertiliser sticks:<\/u> Fertiliser sticks are inserted directly into the substrate and gradually release nutrients over a period of weeks. However, this requires the plant to be watered sufficiently. Especially for plants that are kept rather dry (e.g. cacti) or prefer a very coarse substrate (e.g. orchids), the sticks are often not moist enough so that they dissolve poorly. A good liquid fertiliser should be given preference here. With this fertiliser, the basic needs of all plants can be met in the first instance. If you only care for houseplants and a few balcony plants, you can probably get by with a universal liquid fertiliser. Garden owners should also invest in a universal slow-release fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p>However, special plants also have special needs, so special fertilisers often achieve a better result. Nevertheless, you do not need to buy a separate fertiliser for every plant. Different plant species can be categorised into <strong>groups with similar nutrient composition requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<\/div><ul style=\"--awb-line-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-width:27.2px;--awb-icon-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-margin:11.2px;--awb-content-margin:38.4px;--awb-circlecolor:var(--awb-color4);--awb-circle-yes-font-size:14.08px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-4 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\"><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p><u>Berries, fruit and fruiting vegetables<\/u> (e.g. tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, pumpkins, courgettes) require a higher proportion of potassium. <strong>Berry fertiliser, tomato fertiliser, vegetable fertiliser or fruit fertiliser<\/strong> can be used for all plants in this group.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-seedling fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p><u>Perennials, roses and annual flowering plants<\/u> need phosphorus for lush flowering.
